Born in Motril (Granada) in 1969, Juan Carlos Garvayo is one of the most active and versatile Spanish pianists of today. His intellectually restless personality has also led him to develop a prolific activity in other fields such as musical research, pedagogy as Professor of Chamber Music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, musical programming and flamenco. His poetic side also stands out, with the publication of his poetry collections 33 Sue\u00f1os (2015) and Si deseamos el mar (2023).<\/p>\n

En el a\u00f1o 2013 recibi\u00f3 el Premio Nacional de M\u00fasica en la modalidad de interpretaci\u00f3n como miembro fundador del prestigioso Tr\u00edo Arb\u00f3s, conjunto fundado en 1996 y considerado como una de las formaciones camer\u00edsticas m\u00e1s importantes de Europa. Es Acad\u00e9mico numerario de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes De San Fernando. Entre sus numerosos galardones destacan tambi\u00e9n la Medalla de Oro de la Ciudad de Motril (2016) y el nombramiento como Hijo Predilecto de la Provincia de Granada (2018).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He has performed in the main international halls and festivals in more than 30 countries: Konzerthaus in Vienna, Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Venice Biennale, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Philarmonie in Berlin, National Auditorium in Madrid, Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Teatro Maestranza in Seville, Kuhmo Festival, Time of Music Festival in Viitasaari, Busoni Festival in Bolzano, Wittener Tage f\u00fcr neue Musik, Oslo ULTIMA, Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Flamenco Biennial in Holland, Sintra Festival, Transart Festival, Schwetzingen Festival, Singapore Arts Festival, Festival dei Due Mondi (Spoleto), Shanghai Festival, Nuova Consonanza in Rome, MUSICA Festival in Strasbourg, Sion Festival (Switzerland), Granada International Festival, Donostiarra Musical Fortnight, Santander Festival, His interest in contemporary music has led him to premiere more than 200 works, many of them dedicated to himself, and to work personally with composers of the stature of Hans Werner Henze, Pascal Dusapin, Jonathan Harvey, George Benjamin, Georges Aperghis, Ivan Fedele, Mauricio Sotelo, Toshio Hosokawa, Salvatore Sciarrino, Crist\u00f3bal Halffter, Luis de Pablo and Beat Furrer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He has recorded more than 50 albums for various labels, highlighting his numerous reference recordings in the field of Spanish chamber music and solo piano. For the KAIROS label of Vienna he has recorded as a soloist with the Spanish National Orchestra, the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester and Klangforum Wien . His latest album includes Manuel de Falla's Concerto in harpsichord and piano versions.<\/p>\n

Juan Carlos Garvayo began his music studies at the Royal Conservatory Victoria Eugenia in Granada and continued his studies in the United States at the universities of Rutgers and New York with Am\u00e9rico Caramuta, Diane Richardson and Walter Ponce. His encounter and friendship with Maestro Alfred Brendel have also been decisive in his artistic vision. He holds a PhD in Education from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He is currently President of the Music Section of the Ateneo de Madrid and an elected Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
